COVER EXCLUSIVE : BABY TATE

With over 140 million global streams, the viral sensation "Hey Mickey!" has surged to the forefront of the music scene, enchanting listeners worldwide. At the youthful age of 27, Baby Tate has firmly established herself in the industry, and her artistic journey is only just unfolding. The widely acclaimed song beautifully reimagines Toni Basil's iconic 1981 hit single, crafting an extraordinary musical experience that resonates while embodying inclusivity for the LGBTQIA+ community. Building upon the monumental success of the original track released in 2016, Baby Tate seamlessly collaborated with Bay Area rapper Saweetie to create a bold and infectious remix. Fusing together diverse music genres and backed by a captivating theatrical and instrumental background, this Atlanta-born artist is ascending to new heights while effortlessly setting herself apart from the crowd.

In celebration of Juneteenth and 50 years of Hip Hop, Baby Tate collaborated with Apple Music to revive Ludacris' popular track "Rollout" through her captivating rendition titled "My Bizznazz." Adding her own personal style and charisma, Baby Tate gives this classic throwback a fresh new sound. Coupled with A-list artist collaborations, Grammy award-winning songwriting, and viral hit music all under her resume, there is no question that she's on her way to ultimate stardom.

Q: Congratulations on the massive success of your hit song "Hey Mickey"! How did the idea for the song come about, and what was your inspiration behind it?

A: I made, “Hey, Mickey!” back in 2016, I was going through some beats that my friend sent me, and this one was really fun and bouncy and bumpy and it just made me think of Tony Basil’s “Hey Mickey”. It just gave me that super fun, energetic vibe and I thought it would be cute to say, oh, Mickey, you're so fine on it and so that's what I did.

My inspiration behind it was partly just my dating experience in Atlanta and how sometimes you might run into somebody that you think is really, really cute, but at the end of the day they are not swinging for your team. And unfortunately living in Atlanta, I just used to run into a lot of trade and I didn't know it back in the day, but now I'm a little bit better at knowing.

Q: Given that the song was released in 2016 and had a resurgence this year, how do you feel about the power of social media bringing exposure to new audiences?

A: Social media is amazing and I'm so grateful for TikTok and social media giving a new life to “Hey, Mickey!”. It just goes to show that you should never give up on your ideas and never give up on yourself because something could come back around and completely blow that you might have given up on if you didn't keep going.

Q: We love the new remix with Saweetie! Can you share with us how this collaboration came about? What was the inspiration behind choosing Saweetie to collaborate with, and what was the process like in bringing this remix to life? Additionally, could you tell us about the recording process, your experience working with her in the studio, and how her contributions elevated the song?

A: So this collaboration came about pretty organically through work, honestly. I knew that I wanted someone on the song that had super girly and fun energy so I thought of Sweetie and it just kind of worked out perfectly.

Q: We're excited to hear about your upcoming single "My Bizznazz" that samples Ludacris's "Rollout." Can you tell us a bit about the creative process behind this track and what made you choose to sample that particular song?

A: I wouldn’t necessarily call this a single, but it is a great opportunity presented to me from Apple Music to cover the song of an Atlanta legend for their Juneteenth playlist. I chose Luda because he has such a fun and energetic style and of course he is from the A.

Q: How does it feel to be selected for a dedication to Juneteenth x Hip Hop 50?

A: It feels really great to be able to show love to Hip Hop’s 50th during Black Music Month because at the end of the day,  I am a black artist that, you know, does hip hop, so to be seen and to be acknowledged in that way feels really great. So shout out to Apple Music.

Q: As a pansexual artist, you've been an advocate for the LGBTQ community. How has your personal journey influenced your music and your role as an advocate?

A: So I have really gone through so much growth as a person, as an artist with my sexuality. I know that representation is really important and I believe that because I believe that I HAVE to act like I do. I try to be as open and loud as I can about not only my sexuality, but about making sure that other people in the LGBTQ community are protected, are safe and able to love who they love. I work to put that in my music as much as possible and with my new awakening of my pansexuality and bisexuality I'm going to be implementing it a lot more in my music. It is a part of who I am and my music is a reflection of who I am.

Q: With the release of "My Bizznazz" and your previous successes, how do you envision your music evolving and growing as a 27-year-old rapper? Are there any new themes or sounds you're excited to explore in your upcoming projects?

A: Well, I am a 27 year old artist. I'm a 27 year old pop star. I'm a 27 year old rapper. I'm a 27 year old singer. I'm a 27 year old entertainer. I am everything. And so I believe that with my new releases, more of that will show. My new music will be showcasing everything and all encompassing of my gifts and talents and I'm super excited for people to hear them.

Q: As an artist, you have a unique style that blends various genres and influences. How do you balance staying true to your artistic vision while also appealing to a wide range of listeners?

A: It's really important for me to just be myself. And that is in music, that's outside of music that's everywhere. So fortunately for me, myself is not just one color, one thing, one idea. I'm bursting with ideas at all times and I don't like to box myself in or say, oh no, that's too much, or, oh, that's not me. I just do. I don't try. I just do. And so that's what I'm doing with my music.

Q: Your music often features empowering and uplifting messages. How important is it for you to use your platform to inspire others, particularly those who may be struggling with their identity or facing societal challenges?

A: I am always looking to uplift through my music and through my words wherever I can because life is short, life is short. Sometimes life can be hard and when I listen to music I just want life to feel good. I wanna have fun, I wanna enjoy myself, I want those frequencies to boost me up, not to bring me down. And so that's what I've put into my music. I put a lot of love, a lot of joy, a lot of power, a lot of strength into it because at the end of the day, that's what I need; we all need that, that lift, that boost. Otherwise where would we be?

Q: Looking ahead, what are some of your goals and aspirations for the future? Are there any dream collaborations or projects that you hope to explore in the coming years?

A: Looking ahead I have so many goals. I want to get into acting in a serious way. I jokingly auditioned for the Princess and the Frog on Instagram, but like if they're actually doing auditions, hit me up. I am going to continue making amazing music. I will be dropping something fresh sometime very soon. So I'm just super excited for the future. The future holds so much possibility and I'm just going to keep progressing in what I've been doing, keep growing and keep branching out.

Q: Finally, is there anything else you'd like to share with your fans and our readers about your journey, upcoming projects, or any exciting developments in your career that we should keep an eye out for?

A: Yeah, just stay on the lookout. New music is coming. I know that I have been promising my fans new music for a while, but I promise seriously this time new music is coming an EP is on the way and I can't wait for you guys to hear it. Love ya. Bye.
